"All Days, All Ways" was the motto behind the X-Road: everyday usability under conditions that are anything but everyday. The engineers in Aachen built a programme on its own suspension and aerodynamics concept. AC Schnitzer presented the X-Road as a prototype in 2001, then developed it to series readiness and adapted it to the facelifted BMW 3 Series E46. It could also be combined with many other AC Schnitzer parts for the 3 Series.
The starting point was a set of suspension springs that raised the car by 30 mm, giving it the ability to handle rough ground. Matching wheels followed: Type III light alloy rims in 8.5J x 17 ET 43 with 225/55 R 17 all-terrain tyres. The complete suspension and wheel package was offered for the all-wheel-drive versions of the 3 Series Touring and Saloon.
The body was adapted to match. Wheel arch extensions all round, a front spoiler and a rear apron with a hinted underride guard made the X-Road 30 mm higher and 20 mm wider than the standard car. Optional stainless steel rear silencers with chrome racing tailpipes gave a fuller sound, while airbag steering wheels and carbon, leather and aluminium interior parts completed the programme.
