For the fifth time, AC Schnitzer equipped the campaign car of TUNE IT! SAFE!, the initiative of the German tuning association VDAT supported by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure. Its nationwide campaign takes a stand against illegal and unsafe tuning. Each year a police concept car shows that tuning can satisfy enthusiasts while meeting the highest safety standards and the registration rules. The campaign is funded by sponsors, so it costs taxpayers nothing.
The VDAT presented the police BMW i8 TUNE IT! SAFE! by AC Schnitzer at the Essen Motor Show from 30 November to 9 December 2018, in Hall 7. For a year afterwards, it could be booked for events, fairs and tuning shows. AC Schnitzer lowered the i8 by about 20 mm front and rear for stability in every corner, and tested the spring kit on the Nürburgring Nordschleife and on public roads.
The AC1 lightweight forged wheels, developed specifically for the i8 range in 21 inch and BiColor or anthracite finish, save about 4.4 kg per wheel and noticeably improve lateral dynamics. The aero conversion is made entirely of carbon and follows form follows function: front spoiler elements, centre front spoiler, front side wings and bonnet top add downforce, while side skirts, a Racing rear wing and a three-piece rear diffuser improve underbody suction for even more grip.
Carbon door handle covers, mirror covers and a front grille round off the exterior. Inside, an aluminium paddle shift set, aluminium pedals and an aluminium cover for the iDrive controller underline the light, refined cabin design. With sharper handling and aerodynamics, the police i8 was more than an eye catcher. It was well prepared for any pursuit.
