Every year the German tuning association VDAT puts a special concept car on the road under the motto that only reputable, safe tuning brings real driving pleasure. Its TUNE IT! SAFE! initiative is supported by the police and the German Federal Ministry of Transport, and in 2013 BMW AG was also a partner. Aachen based BMW specialist AC Schnitzer was responsible for most of the equipment on the campaign car, a BMW 428i Coupé.
This was no show car. The police coupé was fully operational and optimised in many areas. Badged ACS4 2.8i Coupé, its engine was uprated to 294 hp (216 kW) and 420 Nm, cutting the 0 to 100 km/h time to 5.7 seconds. The extra power also improved the CO2 value per horsepower and the engine's efficiency, an approach AC Schnitzer called Efficient Performance. A stainless steel twin sport rear silencer with chrome Evo Racing tailpipe added sound and style.
The AC Schnitzer RS coilover suspension, adjustable in rebound and compression, lowered the car by 30 mm and was set up on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Lightweight forged Type VIII wheels in 9.0J x 21 inch noticeably reduced rotating forces and, together with the coilovers, sharpened the handling. They wore Hankook Ventus S1 evo tyres in 245/30 ZR 21 from the campaign's main sponsor. The body kit added a front spoiler, rear diffuser, rear spoiler and roof spoiler.
Partners Foliatec and Hella made the BMW a genuine police car, with the official livery and the RTK 7 special signal system. Inside, aluminium pedals and footrest, a Black Line handbrake grip, a keyholder and velour mats completed the cabin. The concept car showcased a large part of the AC Schnitzer tuning programme, and every part fitted was homologated.
